Leading Change

A full-day workshop for leaders planning and implementing workplace change.

Successful change is planned, communicated, and led well. This workshop gives leaders the tools and techniques to plan for change, bring their team through it, and land a smooth transition from the old way of working to the new. Every participant leaves with an action plan for a real change they’re leading.

Duration: Full day  ·  Delivery: Online or in the ACT  ·  Cohort: 8-20 participants

Aligned to the APS Craft Capability Framework and APS Workforce Strategy 2025.

What your team will learn

Practical change management skills leaders apply to a real change they're leading.

By the end of the workshop, participants will understand the nature of change and recognise its positive and negative consequences. They will analyse how people respond to change and develop strategies for motivating people through it. They will analyse changes currently affecting their organisation. They will develop strategies for gaining cooperation and commitment from team members. And they will explore the essential skills and attitudes needed to successfully manage any change initiative.

What we cover

    • The nature of change — Understanding how change works and its positive and negative consequences.
    • How people respond to change — Analysing responses and developing strategies to motivate people through change.
    • Change in your organisation — Analysing real changes currently affecting your workplace.
    • Cooperation and commitment — Building strategies for bringing your team with you.
    • Skills and attitudes — Exploring the essential capabilities of leaders who manage change well.
    • Your action plan — Building a practical action plan for a change you’re leading.

Workshop format

One full day, delivered to your team as a closed cohort.

McMillan’s Leading Change full-day workshop combines instruction, group analysis, and hands-on planning work. Participants work on a real change they’re leading and leave with a practical action plan.

Who the workshop is for

For APS6-EL2 leaders and their equivalents responsible for planning or implementing workplace change.

Leading Change is designed for leaders at the APS6 to EL2 level (or equivalent) who are planning, implementing, or leading their team through workplace change. Content and examples are tailored to the change your cohort is dealing with before delivery.

Typical cohorts

    • APS6 team leaders leading their team through change initiated elsewhere
    • EL1 and EL2 managers planning and implementing change in their work area
    • Change project teams building a shared approach to leading their initiative
    • Emerging leaders preparing to take on change responsibilities

When this workshop is a good fit:

    • Your team or work area is going through significant change
    • Leaders need practical tools, not just theory, for managing change
    • Change initiatives are stalling because of team resistance or poor communication
    • You want a shared approach across your leadership team for how change is led

How McMillan delivers

An evidence-based delivery approach grounded in adult learning principles and applied consistently to every workshop.

Every workshop follows the same delivery cycle—a consistent approach we apply to every workshop we run.

Our delivery cycle

    1. Initiate — We confirm outcomes, audience, delivery mode, schedule, and success measures. You get a Delivery Plan covering scope, responsibilities, evaluation, risks, and dependencies before we start.
    2. Design and tailor — Where contextualisation is needed, we shape content, scenarios, and activities to your workplace. You get finalised session materials before delivery.
    3. Deliver — We deliver online or face-to-face at your location. Sessions are interactive, practical, and designed for the roles and settings your team actually works in.
    4. Evaluate and close — We capture participant and stakeholder feedback and agreed measures of impact. You get an evaluation summary you can share with your executive.

This same delivery discipline sits under every workshop McMillan runs — non-accredited short courses and nationally recognised qualifications alike.
