Certificate IV in Project Management Practice (BSB40920)

Nationally recognised project management training, contextualised to your workplace.

McMillan Staff Development delivers the Certificate IV in Project Management Practice (BSB40920) as a closed cohort for workgroups in Canberra and online. Every program is built around real projects your team is running — so assessment evidence comes from actual scope, schedule, cost, risk, and stakeholder work, not simulations.

RTO 88187 · Nationally recognised · ACT User Choice funded delivery available

Why contextualised leadership training works

When a team of project practitioners learns together — and the assessment evidence comes from projects they actually plan, budgets they actually manage, risks they actually address, and stakeholders they actually engage — the qualification becomes the by-product of doing better project work.

That’s the offer. Nationally recognised training, delivered to your team, built around real project work in your organisation. Participants finish with a Certificate IV, and the workplace ends up with sharper project delivery, more consistent practice, and stronger project governance.

Every participant needs access to a current or active project throughout the program. That’s how the assessment evidence works — no project, no genuine competency demonstration.

ACT private sector employer? Your team may be eligible for funded delivery through the ACT Government’s User Choice program — see below.

Funded pathway for ACT private sector employers

For BSB40920, ACT User Choice funding is available for New Worker participants only — not Existing Workers. This is a specific eligibility category, and it does not apply to all workgroup participants.

Who counts as a New Worker:

    • Employed full-time within the last 3 months, OR
    • Employed part-time within the last 12 months

For eligible New Worker participants:

    • $2,890 per participant invoiced to the employer (after Skills ACT contribution)

Frequently asked questions

Workgroup delivery is quoted per engagement based on group size, delivery mix, and contextualisation. Quotes include all training, assessment, coaching, materials, and certification. Request a quote for a scoped price for your team.

For BSB40920, funded delivery is only available for New Worker participants (see Q5 for definition) — $2,890 per participant invoiced to the employer. Existing Worker participants and workgroup delivery on a fee-for-service basis are $4,950 per participant.

Typical workgroup programs run over 10–12 months, with workshops scheduled at a cadence agreed with the employer group. Duration can be adjusted based on the group’s pace and project timelines. RPL can shorten timeframes significantly for experienced project practitioners.

As a guide, participants should allow around 7.5 hours per week over 12 months to progress steadily through the program. Actual workload varies depending on existing project experience, current project scope, assessment evidence, and support needs.

Yes — this is how we deliver the qualification. Employer-funded workgroup delivery is quoted per engagement and invoiced to the employer. For eligible New Worker participants, ACT User Choice funding can reduce the training fee to $2,890 per participant — check funded eligibility.

BSB40920 funding under ACT User Choice is only available to New Worker participants — employees who have been:

  • Employed full-time within the last 3 months, OR
  • Employed part-time within the last 12 months

For eligible New Workers, the RTO fee is $2,890 per participant (invoiced to the employer, after the Skills ACT contribution is applied). Delivery involves signed training contracts for each participant.

Existing Workers (all other participants) are delivered on a fee-for-service basis at $4,950 per participant. This is different to some other qualifications (like BSB40420 HR) where funding is available to Existing Workers as well — for BSB40920, the funded pathway is New Worker only.

Either way, McMillan delivers the training to your team as a group.

BSB40920 is pitched at people working in project coordination, project administration, or program support roles — including project officers, project coordinators, junior project managers, business analysts, and administrative staff supporting project delivery. It suits people who are running or contributing to real projects and want formal recognition of their project management skills.

A critical requirement: every participant must have access to a current or active project throughout the program — this is how the assessment evidence is generated. Without project access, the qualification cannot be completed.

No prior formal qualifications are required. Participants should have workplace-appropriate reading, writing, and numeracy skills. LLN (language, literacy and numeracy) screening is completed at enrolment.

Every participant must have access to a current or active project — either one they are initiating as part of the program or one they are already working in. This is confirmed at pre-enrolment. Without project access, participants cannot generate the workplace evidence required for assessment.

For funded workgroups (ACT User Choice), additional New Worker eligibility rules apply to each participant — check funded eligibility for ACT workers.

Participants need:

  • A computer with reliable internet
  • A webcam and microphone for online workshops
  • Access to a current or active project — either one they are initiating as part of the program or one they are already working in

No other equipment, software, or materials are required at the participant’s cost.

Assessments emphasise practical application to real project work. Methods include:

  • Workbooks and knowledge checks
  • Workplace projects — plans, schedules, cost estimates, risk registers, stakeholder engagement, procurement records
  • Case studies and presentations
  • Third-party reports verified by a project sponsor or workplace contact

To successfully complete BSB40920, participants must demonstrate competence in all 9 units.

McMillan provides an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Participants can expect:

  • Trainer support within two business days via the LMS
  • Technical and study assistance
  • Reasonable adjustments for disability, health, or personal circumstances
  • Culturally safe learning and support for First Nations participants

Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows existing project management experience and knowledge to be assessed against qualification requirements, reducing study load. This is particularly relevant for experienced project practitioners who have already developed competencies through their work.

Credit Transfer applies equivalent units completed with another RTO toward this qualification. RPL potential is assessed as part of the initial quote.

Face-to-face workshops are delivered in Canberra. Live online workshops via MS Teams are available Australia-wide. Most programs use a blend.

Yes. BSB40920 Certificate IV in Project Management Practice is a nationally recognised qualification issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework. McMillan is a registered training organisation (RTO 88187), listed on the National Register at training.gov.au.
